Pidgin is one of the most popular multi protocal instant messaging chatting client which enables your to chat with your friends over popular chatting networks including facebook, MSN, Skype, Yahoo,Gtalk, etc from one place. So you don’t need to make trouble using so many softwares for so many chatting protocols.
That day one my friend asked me “How do I add facebook chat with my pidgin“? Because by default currently pidgin doesn’t support facebook chatting protocol support officially. So we are unable to configure and chat with our facebook friends using pidgin. But we are very luck that pidgin has a large number of third party developed plugins which will enhance the default pidgin. FacebookChat plugin make it possible to use facebook chat on pidgin. It’s available for both Windows and Linux.
Add Facebook Protocol Supporter Plugin with Pidgin :
1. Make sure pidgin is properly installed on your windows or linux.
2. First download facebook chat plugin from google codes from here. If you are confused which file should download the look here . Here they told which should be downloaded for what.
For Windows
Run the .exe installer and install it or,
Copy the libfacebook.dll file to your C:\Program Files\Pidgin\plugins\ (or equivalent) directory and libjson-glib.dll to C:\Program Files\Pidgin\ and restart Pidgin
For Pidgin Portable
Download the latest dll from here
Copy the libfacebook.dll file to PidginPortable\App\Pidgin\plugins\, copy the libjson-glib.dll to PidginPortable\App\Pidgin\ and extract the protocol icons to PidginPortable\App\Pidgin\pixmaps\pidgin\protocols\
For Linux
If you have a Debian-based distro, install using the .deb package or,
Copy one of the .so files to either /usr/lib/purple-2/ (for 32-bit Linux), /usr/lib64/purple-2/ (for 64-bit Linux), /usr/lib/pidgin/ (for Nokia/Maemo) or ~/.purple/plugins/ (if you dont have root access) and restart Pidgin
3. After installing the plugin with pidgin, you are done. Now you can configur your facebook chat with pidgin by Account > Manage Accounts >Add > Facebook.
now use your facebook username/mail and password to configure your facebook. After that your pidgin will try to connect to facebook chat protocol. After connecting facebook you will able to use facebook chat.
